AARP Three Year Pilot Results: Medigap Patient-Centered Care

The Medicare Supplement insurance (Medigap) population has to-date not been a well-researched or understood demographic, and thus has been largely ignored as a potential opportunity to address Medicare Fee For Service program challenges. Yet Medigap represents approximately 20 percent of the 50 million Americans covered by Medicare. Until recently, very few attempts have been made to deliver coordinated health care to this population.

Study results have just been released from three-year evaluation of a pilot program conducted between 2009 and 2012 with more than 28,000 AARP Medicare Supplement Plan beneficiaries insured through UnitedHealthcare. .

AARP Services and UnitedHealthcare joined forces as part of a healthcare transformation initiative with the goal of gaining a better understanding of the characteristics, needs and general health of AARP Medicare Supplement Plan patients, while preserving freedom of choice, enhancing care coordination and managing costs in the current fee-for-service environment. The pilot tested various care management approaches to determine how best to support the health and needs of this population. Results of the pilot suggest a patient-centered approach addressing comprehensive social, logistical and medical needs achieves the greatest savings and also produces high patient satisfaction ratings.
