Hospitals can no longer be complacent about their community benefits reporting and patient financial assistance policies. With the U.S. Treasury Department issuing new guidelines on how and when to offer financial assistance, and the Internal Revenue Service in the midst of revamping the reporting requirements -- and scrutiny -- of both community benefits and patient financial assistance, not-for-profit hospital executives are negotiating a new landscape where the risk of failure could lead to new taxes and even a complete loss of tax exemption.
